This beautiful two story Italianate style building erected circa 1876 was built as the family home of Joseph Dransfield – first elected mayor of Wellington.
Since Dransfield’s death in 1906 the house enjoyed a chequered history, operating at various stages as a boarding house, diplomat’s residence, doctor’s surgery and arts centre.
Partially destroyed by fire in the mid 1990’s the house has now been returned to its former glory and is listed as a historic place.
The upper storey comprises of law offices and a private residence.
A large part of the ground floor now operates as an elegant venue for every type of corporate and social occasion, boasting polished, rimu floorboards, restored plaster and rimu ceilings, open fire places and a surrounding veranda. Crystal chandeliers, original oil paintings and ornate mirrors contribute to the unique atmosphere of the venue.
